During the last 10 years a tentsite system of more than 700 sites has been developed in Denmark in order to satisfy cyclists, walkers, boaters and riders who do not like to camp on big traditional camping sites together with cars and caravans.

The system is mainly based on private farmers and other landowners, who have space in their mind as well as in their home to host these non motorised tourists for one or two nights.

The cycling tourists bring their own tent and do not necessarily have contact with the host/owner, but often guests and host meet at the fireplace in the evening to exchange experiences of life etc.

The only facilities required at the sites are toilet and water and often fireplace. The price per person per night is maximum 15 DKK.

Besides the private sites, you can find several public tentsites established by municipalities, counties or national Forrest and environmental Agency. These sites are often for free and the forest sites do not have toilet and water, but leaves you with a feeling of being alone in nature!

Information about the sites is avaible in the book "Overnatning i det fri 2000 - 2001" published by Friluftsrådet. (English summary of rules for the sites).

Many organisations cooperate in order to maintain this network of tentsites. The secretariat is run by Dansk Cyklist Forbund and De Frie Fugle in cooperation.

New tentsites and changes are shown on the website www.teltpladser.dk. Here you can also find basic information about the tentsite system with summary in English and German - and you can order the book.
