Bicycle Tourism in Denmark at national and regional levels
Annie Larsen, head of information and PR National strategy The Danish Tourist Board has for many years - together with the tourist industry - been marketing and developing bicycle tourism in Denmark and there is now registered a still increasing interest in spending the holiday on bicycle. When it comes to routes for tourists, who want to spend their holiday on two wheels, Denmark is absolutely in the lead. Denmark has at least 10,000 km connected bicycle routes. For long, the 10 national bicycle routes (3,500 km) have been the main bicycle marketing products of Denmark together with regional and local routes, but the increasing interest for bicycle holiday during the last few years, has resulted in the establishment of four new routes with international approach. Three of them enter into a system of international bicycle routes, namely "The Baltic Bike Route", The Bicycle Route Copenhagen-Berlin" and "The North Sea Cycle Route". "The route around the "Limfjorden" opens this year. Because of the new products The Danish Tourist Board and the four networks behind the four routes have decided to co-operate in a large common marketing campaign aiming at the European market. Regional strategy The Regional Tourism Development Company, Turisme region syd, takes part in two large bicycle projects which are two of the four national main routes. Turisme region syd finds it necessary to co-operate with other regions in order to become visible on the international market and to increase the amount of bicycle tourists. 1. Bicycle Route Copenhagen-Berlin . . . on bike crossing 630 km land and sea. Two throbbing, European metropolises, 630 green-blue kilometres, a short sea trip. From the town hall square in Copenhagen you can start your trip to Berlin. The Danish part of the route is perfect for a cycle holiday. You roll through the magnificent East Zealand with the beautiful Cliffs of Stevns and Præstø Fjord down to the islands of Møn and on to Falster - all the way almost along the Baltic Sea. From Gedser you cross the Baltic with the ferry to Rostock. Well arrived in Rostock the German part of the route leads you through Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Brandenburg to the German capital Berlin. The route is approx. 630 km long. Experience country and people from two cultures at close quarters from your bike and combine the pleasant cycle holiday with exciting experiences in two of the most recognized cultural cities of Europe. A brilliant way to combine an active holiday with the many possibilities of a holiday in two capitals. The route opened April 28th 2001, and is the result of a co-operation between one regional tourist organisation and two counties in Denmark - and two regional tourist organisations and two Länder in Germany. A unique bike route of 800 km gathering Denmark's most beautiful landscapes together. If you are interested in a holiday full of fresh air, exercise and beautiful nature, the Baltic Bike Route is the ideal holiday. The route runs through some of the most beautiful countryside in Denmark - the fjord scenery west of the Little Belt, the South Funen Archipelago, the open landscape on Lolland-Falster and the magnificent cliff Møns Klint. The sea and the myriad of idyllic islands make up the unique theme of the bike tour - you will never be far from the sea. And every 30 km or so along the route you will find a wide selection of places to eat and to spend the night. There are also lots of opportunities to see exciting attractions. The Baltic Bike Route is about 800 km long and mainly follows existing bike routes sign-posted by national, regional and local authorities. The route has been arranged so that you can either cycle the whole route or divide it up into smaller trips. The route opened June 7th 2000 and is the result of a co-operation between three regional tourist organisations and five counties. More info can be found at www.bikeandsea-denmark.com. Both routes are supported by the Danish Tourist Board.
